The PNY Duo-Link USB 3.0 Flash Drive -Product Overview
I take a large amount of photos when I’m traveling and/or hiking and I need to be able to transfer files easily and quickly in order to free up storage space on my iPhone.
The PNY Duo-Link 3.0 USB flash drive is great for adding storage or doing file transfers to and from your PC or iOS. That last part was the thing that I was most interested in, the iOS to PC transfer.
When I purchased this flash drive it was because I was continuously running out of space on my mobile due to all the photos I was taking and I was getting that dumb, irritating error telling me about it. When searching around for an easy fix to this problem, there weren’t any good options to transfer from an Apple device to a PC without multiple steps getting in the way of efficiency (mostly because the iPhone doesn’t come with an expansion slot —thanks a lot Apple!) Of course I could have paid a monthly fee to add more storage in the iCloud, but I opted to try and find an external storage device that would do the trick with little to no hassle in place of paying each month. The bonus would be that it would double as its own storage device, too, for back up.
The PNY Duo-Link 3.0 USB flash drive does the job. It’s small for an easy, on-the-go transfer, and it has the two, built-in, necessary connectors for both Apple and PC devices. The Duo-Link is a typical flash drive but what makes it terrific is that it has two connecters in one drive: a slide-out Lightning connector for your iOS device at one end and a USB 3.0 connector at the other end for your PC.
I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
PNY Duo-Link USB 3.0 Flash Drive –Installing the App
The drive uses an app that must be downloaded and installed on your mobile. The app is free. Simply go to the App Store on your phone and choose the PNY Duo-Link product, click on the GET button, then install.
NOTE: Instead of the button saying “Get” it could say “Purchase”, which is what happened to me, but the app is indeed free and even if it says purchase, you won’t be charged. The app will just download without any payment and then you can hit the install button.
If you insert the PNY Duo-Link into your Apple device without first installing the App, you will get a message stating that the Duo-Link works only with an app that you haven’t installed and gives you a link directly to it in the App Store.
Once you’ve downloaded the app, the home screen on your phone will have this little icon.
PNY Duo-Link USB 3.0 Flash Drive –How it works
When you are ready to transfer your photos or files, simply push the grey button on the PNY Duo-Link flash drive and slide it until the Lightening connector is visible. Then insert the connector into your Apple device. A pop-up will appear on your screen.
Tap on “Allow” and the drive will open up. Your screen should now look like the image below. Then to transfer your photos, you will need to click on the picture that says Photo Library.
It will take you to a screen that shows all of the albums on your device (iOS Camera roll).
Choose whichever album you wish to do the transfer for. I’ve chosen All Photos. That album will open up and you should see all the photos contained in it. Next, you are going to tap the Edit button at that top right left of your screen.
You can either individually choose which photos you want to transfer by tapping on each of them, or you can choose the Select All button at the bottom left of your screen and a check mark will then appear on each photo.
At this point, two choices are given at the bottom of your screen for transferring: Copy and Move.
If you choose Copy, then all the photos you have chosen will be copied to the Duo-Link but still remain on your Apple device. If you choose Move, then once the photos have been copied over, the device will automatically delete all moved photos off of your Apple device.
NOTE: I usually chose to copy photos to the Duo-Link rather than move them. This allows me to go back into my device and manually delete photos that I don’t wish to keep on it and save a few that I do want to keep on it.
Whichever you choose, Copy or Move, a new screen will open up that is within the Duo-Link flash drive. You now must choose whether you want to save the photos to the App Storage on your phone or to the flash drive storage.
SUPER COOL ALERT: The Duo-Link app doubles as an additional back up, meaning you can also choose to back up all your files within the app itself as well as the external flash drive!
I always choose Drive Storage because remember, I don’t have any room on my phone. Once I choose the Drive Storage, another screen will pop-up from the storage drive. You will then want to tap the Copy to Here tab that is at the very top right of your screen.
While the app is copying your photos it will show you a count of all the photos being copied over.
Once the transfer has been complete, you will be brought back to the home page
All you need to do now is exit out of the app and then take out the Duo-Link flash drive from your Apple device.
PNY Duo-Link USB 3.0 Flash Drive –Transferring files to your computer
Once the files are on the Duo-Link flash drive all that remains is to upload the photos onto your PC. The process is not any different than using any other USB flash drive.
Since the PNY Duo-link is set to the Lightening connecter because you’ve just used it on your Apple device, you simply need to push down on the gray button located in the middle of the device and slide it until the USB flash drive appears and insert the drive into your computer. The first time you do this, the drive will install itself, and from there you just copy or move the files to your computer.
That’s it. All done.

- You can transfer and share files between your iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, & Mac or PC quickly and easily.
- It can also be used for storing music, video and movie files and it streams movies or music from DUO-LINK to your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch without a wireless network
- In addition to transferring files, I like that the App itself is an additional storage device, as well.
- There is no need for a cable, computer, or wireless connection
- No battery required
PNY Duo-Link USB 3.0 Flash Drive – Cons
- Even though its size is a plus, I also consider it a negative because it can easily get lost. It’s “free floating” and by that I mean there is no place on the device where you could hook it to your key chain, camera bag, computer bag, etc. There’s a risk that it could get lost or stolen.
- I don’t particularly care for the cap-less design since it leaves both the USB or Lightning connecter exposed at all times. I would prefer that there was a cap on the USB side for added protection.
PNY Duo-Link USB 3.0 Flash Drive – Overall verdict
I definitely recommend purchasing it. The pros far out weight the cons. It’s made my life a lot easier when it comes to transferring my photos on the fly. I haven’t had any issues with either the App or the device and neither have any of my friends who also own it.
